Melbourne has some of the best food I've ever had, but I have yet to find good Mexican food. I'm fairly certain it doesn't exist, but if there are any Australian readers who can recommend a good burrito place, I will gladly treat for a weekend lunch!

I just dont think Australia does mexican very well. Im sure theres gotta be a great Mexican place out there somewhere but they seem pretty sparse. Having lived here my whole life i have NEVER been to a mexican resturant or had Mexican takeaway (and yes i do like Mexican food, we make our own all the time). Good luck with the search!
Been here for 10 years. Grew up on the Texas-Mexican border. Lived and breathed Mexican food my entire life...until I came to Australia. I've never found a place in Melbourne that does Mexican anywhere close to what I used to eat at home, and believe me, I've looked...for 10 years! Perhaps the most authentic place I've found is called 'Los Amates' on Johnston St in Fitzroy. Haven't been in a couple of years, so not sure it's still there. The food there was more like the food you'd find in the interior of Mexico versus the Tex-Mex style Americans are more accustomed to. It was good though. Mostly we just cook it at home. Good luck and if you find a good place, be sure to let me know!
Here in Adelaide we have a store called Chile Mojo owned by a guy from Arizona and his Australian wife. They have a frozen takeaway section and they make some pretty authentic food. Plus you can get all you need to make it at home. I know that doesn't help you out much, but if you are ever in Adelaide...
Well I haven't been lucky enough to experience authentic mexican food really in Canada anyway, but Australia is TERRIBLE at it. Black beans don't exist here!!!
That being said, there is a mexican place in my old suburb (Fairfield) that's owned by a couple from Cali. It was really good, but more the Californian-Mexican than authentic I think.
No good Mexican food? That is absolutely tragic!!!! Do they have good pizza at least?
p.s. I am reading Something Blue, too. Or more like it is sitting on my desk and I am wishing I could just magically absorb the whole story instead of taking time to read it. Because time is something I do not have. Damn wedding planning!
We were on a hunt as well, but gave up quickly, and just make it ourselves. Wanna come over for fajitas?
I am a Colorado girl so I LOVE my Mexican food. (Actually visiting my parents at home right now and have been eating it every day!) Am living in Sydney and have found some options - not sure that either have locations in Melbourne but if you make it over our way for a weekend, MadMex is a casual chain very similar to Chipotle and Cafe Pacifico is a good sitdown place.
