One Way Ticket Please

I booked my ticket to Melbourne today for July 2 - yes I know that it will be the middle of winter; but in my defense I may not have read the fine print on the visa that said I need to leave within 2 months from the time it is granted AND who would have thought that you can get a visa same day??!! THEY REALLY SHOULD TELL YOU THAT IN BIG BOLD PRINT SO YOU CAN PLAN ACCORDINGLY. But either way I'm excited to go and looking forward to moving and trying something different.

I called my mom this morning after I received confirmation of the flight and she just about fell off her chair and may have even of been suffering from a bit of hyperventilation; but other than that it went over pretty well. I spoke with her around 430 this afternoon and she was enjoying 80 cent Miller's at one of the local bars near our house - And let me tell you she was much more on board with the plan at that time! (Yes you did read that right 80 CENT beers - you don't even want to know what kinds of crowds come in for that! People whose necks tend to sway a color of red I would think) Just kidding! I love that bar!

Below is a picture of the flowers that my mom sent me today to congratulate me on graduation. (Unfortunately I received them right after I gave her a heart attack with my moving news so I really did feel terrible about that!) Here she was being really sweet and telling me she loved me and was looking forward to celebrating with me and I'm calling her telling her I'm moving half way around the world for a year. Doesn't bode well for daughter of the year award I wouldn't think.

Oh yeah!!!! That sounds soo fun...and I have to imagine that I can't be far from that bar...and an 80 cent beer doesn't sound half bad either ;)

Congrats on your ticket - you're in for quite an adventure. The Aussies are very friendly, though and I'm sure you'll be made welcome. There's a bit of anti-Americanism here, though it's not as bad as some places. One piece of advice, just take what comes your way down here with no complaints. You'll blow the stereotype out of the water and win the locals over.

Oh, and winter in Melbourne isn't anything like winter in Chicago so no worries on that front. Just bring a raincoat.

Telling my mom we were moving here was the worst. I still feel bad about it. Luckily she's here visiting right now-- leaving the day after Mother's Day-- how appropriate.

Congrats on being brave enough to come Down Under for a visit... and thanks for joining my posse (we'd call it 'mob'). I finally decided to see who the heck was reading my silly little blog... such nice people!!!

In response to AFM: Am not sure Aussies are really anti-American (although I admit we can be pretty skeptical about anything we consider OTT)... mostly we do love Yanks and the enthusiasm you have for life. And just as you make us talk to hear our accent, expect to repeat things numerous times so we can practice rolling our r's!!!

Enjoy... look forward to reading your experiences!!!

Just happened to stumble across your blog from Day Zero website (okay not so much stumble as click on random links for inspiration & motivation). It just so happens that I'm a Melbournian myself and I really hope you'll be happy here ! It's actually not very cold despite how south we are - i mean it doesn't snow here or anything. On the other hand our summers can be extremely hot. Anyway, I best ramble on. You will experience Melbourne shortly ;-)

What will you be doing in Melbourne ?
